Now that Spring has official started, it maybe time to do a little Spring cleaning in your makeup bag. We all have a couple pieces of makeup in our drawer that we tell ourselves we may one day use, however the truth is every thing has a shelf life, including makeup. You may have several products that you had no idea had already expired. So take a minute to go through your makeup and throw out the old, to make room for the new.
First start out with your mascara. Mascara can be a breading ground for bacteria. Mascara should be thrown away every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if you notice a change in smell or texture.
Foundation will last you longer. It can last up to 12 months if it is water-based and 18 if oil-based. Concealer will also last you about 12 months.
Pencil, lip and eye liners, 3 years. You may actually just run out of this much sooner because you should be sharpening them often. The same for eyeshadow, it can last up to 3 years.
Lip stick has been controversial, some experts have said should be thrown out every 1-2 years, others say up to 4 years. I like to play it safe and throw it out after 2. Chances are after 2 years I have found a new color I like to wear.
