Portion Control

Moderation is the word we all know exists but yet we all seam to ignore it when we serve ourselves a meal. Portion control is vital if you are trying to lose or maintain your weight. Even if weight is not an issue for you, sometimes over eating leaves you feeling bloated and tired. Sometimes with portion sizes so large you do not realize how much you are eating, you may already be full but continue to eat just because it is in front of you. So help yourself out by not over serving yourself a full plate. If you are eating at a restaurant most of the time your plate is enough for two servings so ask for a doggy bag and only eat until you are satisfied not full. If portion control is on your goal avoid buffets because there you are easily over eating. The best way to avoid over eating, is to always eat before you are starving and stop eating before you are full.

Here are a few comparisons to serving sizes to help you know how much you are eating.

1 baked potato = fist
1 ounce of chips = 2 hand fulls
3 ounces of meat (one serving) =size of your palm or deck of cards
1 serving of vegetable = 1 handful

1 serving of bread = one slice
½ cup cooked broccoli = scoop of ice cream
Medium piece of fruit = baseball
1 cup of rice or pasta = tennis ball
